Hard Maple is typically graded differently than other domestic hardwoods. 1st GradeHard Maple is equivalent to "Select & Better" in species such as Red Oak and Cherry. 2nd Grade Maple is equivalent to a #1 Common in other species, and 3rd Grade being equivalent to a #2 Common. For the absolute cleanest Hard Maple flooring choice we now offer 1st Grade White Hard Maple which is sorted at the mill for white color.
We offer Solid Unfinished Hard Maple flooring in several different grades and board widths to meet your demands. Hard Maple is known for its clean, light look in the 1st Grade and is desired for it's rustic color variations of blonde to almost black in the 2nd and 3rd Grades. Hard Maple is a 1450 on the Janka Hardness Chart which is significantly harder than Northern Red Oak. This hardness, as well as other important factors, has made Hard Maple the most used hardwood species in the world for sports floors.
We offer Rift & Quartersawn Hard Maple in 2 1/4, 3, 4, & 5" board widths. Rift & Quarter Sawn hardwood is unique in several ways. Most importantly, these sawing methods make the hardwood more stable in service making them suitable over subflooring with in-floor radiant heat systems. The visual benefits of this type of flooring are straighter, more consistent graining and the "Ribbon & Flake" pattern that is highly sought-after, especially in upscale properties. Rift & Quartersawn hardwood is also more shock resistent making it less susceptible to denting than plain sawn hardwood. It is estimated that only 2% of all the world's hardwood is Rift & Quartered Sawn, making it very rare and desirable.
Maple hardwood is another common domestic material for flooring. In fact, the highest grade of maple flooring is used most often for sports floors such as gymnasiums and basketball courts. In our store we carry northern hard maple flooring in three grades - grade one through three. However, grade one unfinished maple flooring is the equivalent in quality as a select and better grade in all other types of solid domestic woods. Although the highest grade of unfinished maple flooring has a lighter color, lesser grades combine this light shade with darker grain. As far as the type of solid maple flooring we carry, we have common and rift and quarter sawn cuts in strip and plank sizes.
A brief description of each grade is provided here for your convenience:
1st Grade: A very clean grade with consistent color and the least character among the different grades. Although more consistent in color than the lower grades, it is expected to display some presence of natural character, but still a very clean look overall.
2nd Grade: This grade starts to show nature's character marks such as knots, mineral streaking, and color/grain variation. This grade is very casual and is great for all types of home and business decors.
3rd Grade: This grade will have a wider range of color variation than 2nd Grade. It will also have more knots and mineral streaks than the higher grades, the average knot size will be larger, and some open knots are included.
Although we try extremely hard to provide photographs that accurately depict our many flooring products, the colors shown may vary in color from the actual flooring. This is due to different computer monitor settings that you may be viewing our website on, image quality, transfer quality etc. Our pictures are only meant to help guide you with your color choices as you make your very important flooring decision.
